Michael Jackson transformed the music video and have influence numerous music styles, from hip hop, to rock, pop and R&B. Many of today’s artists cite Michael as an influence in their work – Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Green Day, Lenny Kravtiz just to name a few.

His videos and music have helped to break down racial barriers, it changed the focus from rock to pop and R&B and was associated with MTV throughout the 90s.

Michael Jackson was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his lifetime, including the World Music Awards’ Best Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (twice), Songwriters Hall of Fame. Michael also won multiple Guinness World Records, Grammy Awards, more number 1 singles that any other male artist and the world’s best selling male solo pop artist.

Will.i.am, who produced three remixes on the celebratory reissue Thriller 25, said: "It was the first time a black dude was on MTV. It was the first time you saw things that were happening in the ghettos and kids in the suburbs were copying it. It was like Broadway fused with street performance and his wardrobe was fly. He made it possible to be yourself and be free and just do you."

No one is sure of exactly how much money Michael earned throughout his career, but it has been estimated to be $500 million. This is from royalties on his solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements. There has been much press on the size of his fortune but it has been said that his spending habits have caused him to experience financial hardship in the last few years before his death. Reports were that Michael was $400m in debt when he died.

Though the child molestation charges and the bizarre behaviour in the later parts of his life may overshadow his musical genius, Michael Jackson was a talent that could not be ignored. And his legacy will live on in the hearts of his fans forever.
