The Jackson Five
The Jackson Five were originally the Jackson Brothers which formerly consisted of Jackie, Tito, Jermaine Jackson and two other friends. They were renamed as the Jackson Five when Michael joined the group. The Jackson Five were active from 1964 to 1989 and played a variety of music from R&B, soul, pop and disco.
The Jackson Five provided the launching pad for Michael Jackson’s solo career.
They were also the first act in recording history to have their first four singles reach the top of the American charts. They were:
- ‘I Want You Back’
- ‘ABC’
- ‘The Love You Save’
- ‘I’ll Be There
Their later singles were Top 5 hits and number 1 hits on the R&B charts.
Importantly, the Jackson Five were the first black teen idols to appeal to both white and black audiences, partly due to the successful promotion by Motown Records.
When the Jackson Five left Motown Records, they changed their name and Jermaine was replaced by Randy (Jermaine chose to stay at Motown). After 2 years they signed with Epic Records and regained control of their writing, production and image. Their success continued with hits such as "Shake Your Body", "Lovely One" and "State of Shock". However, the disappointing sales of their album led the group to being dropped by their record label. The group has never formally broken up but has been dorman since then. However, all 5 brothers performed together at 2 Michael Jackson tribute concerts in September 2001.
