Thriller!
In 1982, Michael Jackson issued his second album, Thriller, which became the most successful album ever. The album remained in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 for 80 weeks and it was the first album to have 7 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles. These included "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’".
In promoting the album, Michael was one of the first people to use the concept of music videos for the singles. He created music videos for Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller. Many people may not be aware that it was MTV that actually funded the 14 minute Thriller video. Michael often referred to these videos as short films, rather than music videos.
Thriller currently remains the best selling album of all time, with 110 million copies sold worldwide. It won a record 8 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year 1984.
Michael’s popularity soared even higher. On 25 March 1983 he performed live on the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" TV special. He wore his soon to become distinctive sequined glove and debuted his signature move – the moonwalk. Michael learnt this dance move from Jeffrey Daniel, former Soul Train dancer and Shalamar member.
This performance was seen by 47 million viewers and drew comparisons to Elvis Presley and the Beatles’ appearances.
